EFCC Convicts Man for N16m Fraud

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today, February 6, 2023, secured the conviction of one Abubakar Mukhtar before Justice A.A Bello of the Kaduna State High Court on one count charge of dishonest misappropriation.

The charge reads,” that you, Abubakar Mukhtar sometimes in June, 2022 in Kaduna within the Judicial Division of this Honourable Court dishonestly misappropriated and converted to your own use the sum of Sixteen Million Naira (N16,000,000.00) belonging to Yahaya Mahmud and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 293 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 and punishable under Section 294 of the same Law”.

He pleaded guilty to the charge, prompting the prosecution counsel, P.C Onyeneho to review the facts of the case and ask the court to convict the defendant accordingly. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with an option of N100, 000 fine which shall be paid to the Kaduna State Government.

The convict had restituted the nominal complainant of the fund invested.

Troubles started for Abubakar in June, 2022 when he defrauded his victim the sum of N 16,000,000 on the pretext that he received a local purchase order from Sunti Golden Sugar Estate Limited, Mokwa Niger State to supply it with petroleum products. They agreed to share the profit on pro rata basis but the convict became incommunicado thereafter.
