The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Makurdi Zonal Command, on Monday, February 6, 2023, arraigned one Charles Adama Ochagwuba, before Justice Abdul Dogo of the Federal High Court, sitting in Makurdi, Benue State on a four count amended charge bordering on land fraud to the tune of N2, 250,000 (Two Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) only.
One of the counts reads: "That you, Charles Adama Ochagwuba, sometime in 2021, in Benue State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained the aggregate sum of N2,250,000 (Two Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) only from Edeh Emmanuel Iduh under false pretence, pretending to be a land agent capable of selling a land for and on behalf of the purported land owner, Mr. Otowo Johnson Anjama located at G.R.A behind VIP Guest House, which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offense contrary to section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences, Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act".
Charles pleaded 'not guilty' to the four charges.
In view of his plea, the prosecuting counsel, Abdullahi Idris, asked the court to remand the defendant and fix a date for trial to commence.
However, defence counsel, O. P. Adinye, urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.
Justice Dogo, remanded the defendant in Makurdi Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till February 13, 2023 for hearing of bail application.
