The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today January 6, 2023, arraigned one Binta Balarabe Kubau before Justice A.A. Bello of the Kaduna State High Court on one count charge bordering on contract scam.
The defendant, posing as a staff of the Ministry of Works, Kaduna State extorted the sum of N590,000 from a complainant as tender fee purportedly for a non-existent contract for the construction of drainage, road, borehole, as well as supply of medical equipment.
The charge reads; “That you, Binta Kuba,sometime in October, 2019 in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court with intent to defraud did obtained property to wit; a total sum of N 590,000.00 ( Five Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira) only from one Mahmud Yusuf under the pretence that you will secure a contract for him with the Kaduna State Ministry of works which pretence you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge. Prosecution counsel, P.C Onyeneho urged the court to fix a date for trial while her defence counsel, K. Livingstone urged the court to admit his client to bail.
Justice Bello granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N 200,000 and a surety in like sum, who must own a land property within the jurisdiction of the court.
The defendant was remanded in Kaduna Correctional Centre and case adjourned till March 29, 2023.
