EFCC Arraigns Man for N15.9m Rice Scam

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Friday Essien before Justice Daruis Khobo of the State High Court sitting in Kaduna, Kaduna State on a two count charge bordering on cheating and obtaining by false pretenses.

The defendant is alleged to have issued dud cheques raised in the name of Adachi Poultry Feeds in payment for 600 bags of rice from the complainant.

Investigation revealed that Adachi Poultry Feeds belongs to one Uloko Sunday Oghereamh, who had on the 9th August, 2022 reported to the Galadimawa Police Station, that his car was burgled by thieves and his company cheques and laptop stolen.

Count one reads: “that you, Friday Essien and Daniel Mike Eneche (now at large) on or about the 2nd of September, 2022 in Kaduna, within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired amongst yourselves to commit an illegal act to wit; cheating and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 58 (1) (a) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 and punishable under Section 59 of the same Law”.

Count two reads: “that you, Friday Essien on or about the 2nd of September, 2022 in Kaduna, within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, fraudulently induced one Abdulsalam Yusuf to deliver to you 600 bags of rice worth the total sum of Fifteen Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Naira only (N15, 900,000.00) and thereby committed the offence of cheating contrary to Section 306(a) and punishable under Section 307 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017”.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Consequently, the prosecution counsel, K.S Ogunnade asked for a date for commencement of trial while the defense counsel, Kabiru. S. Runka urged the court to admit his client to bail;.

Justice Khobo adjourned to April 6, for the ruling on bail application.
