EFCC Arraigns Man for Land Fraud in Maiduguri

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, March 10, 2023, arraigned one Baba Mele Ismail before Justice Umaru Fadawu of Borno State High Court, Maiduguri on one count charge of obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N2, 450,000.00 (Two Million, Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira).

The charge reads: "That you, Baba Mele Ismail and Bulama Yahaya Jibrin ( convict) sometime in August 2016 at Maiduguri, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of N2,450,000.00 (Two Million Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from Mohammed Usman and Mohammed Usman Kime, under the pretense that the said amount represent payment for the purchase of a purported four (4) Plots of Land laying and situate at Airport Road, Maiduguri Borno State which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1(1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences, Act 2006 and Punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act.”

The defendant pleaded 'not guilty' to the charge preferred against him by the EFCC.

Counsel for the prosecution, Faruku Mohammed prayed the court to remand the defendant and fix a date for trial to commence.

Justice Fadawu remanded the defendant at Maiduguri Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till March 28, 2023, for trial.
