Justice Muhammad Garba Umar of the Federal High Court, Bauchi today convicted an sentenced Ahmad Adamu, a 25-year-old native doctor from Tilden Fulani, Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State to 12 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a two count charge of obtaining by false pretence brought against him by the Economic and financial Crimes Commission.

Adamu allegedly defrauding a hospital worker and resident of Tilden Fulani, Hajia Akilatu Ahmad of  a total sum of N500,000 under the pretext that he had mystical powers to make her rich

Sometime in April 2013,  Ahmad was said to have called Akilatu on phone severally, even at late night for days, while pretending to be a 'spirit', and telling her that he was capable of solving all her worldly problems, including making her rich. He however warned his victim to be discreet by not divulging the deal to anyone else she would lose her life.
Accordingly, Akilatu would be asked to put money in a nylon bag and place under a tree Ahmad described to her. At other times, at the cemetery, late evenings. Being afraid, she deposited the money as directed. She was assured the money would be used in appeasing other spirits who were going to bring her bountiful recompense. She deposited a total cash of N500,000 (Five hundred thousand naira).
As days and weeks went by, she was finally asked to go to a graveyard for the collection of a gift the spirits had placed there for her. On getting there, she saw a sealed carton with a $100 note placed on top. She got home, opened the carton and found it filled with saw dust and realized the dollar note was counterfeit.
The charge against Ahmad read, in part, ‘That you, Ahmad (M), sometimes in April 2013 at Tilden Fulani of Toro Local  Government Area of Bauchi State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court and with intent to defraud represented yourself to one Akilatu Ahmad as having possessed the powers to make large sums of money for her,  you being a Demon/ Jinn and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 2(b) and 2(c) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006".
Ahmad pleaded guilty to the two count charge against him. In light of his plea, Justice Muhammad Umar convicted the accused as charged. The judge sentenced  him to 5 years in prison on count one and 7 years on count two. The sentences are to run concurrently.
