The Port Harcourt Zonal Commander of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE Nwanneka Nwokike has called for increased collaboration between the EFCC and Navy in the fight against illegal oil bunkering and other economic crimes.
He made the call on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at the Nigerian Navy Intelligence School, NNIS, Obima, Rivers State while delivering a lecture on the " History, Roles and Organisation of the EFCC" to trainee officers of the Nigerian Navy.
Nwokike took the trainee officers and ratings on an excursion drive through the history, roles, structure, organization and detailed works of the EFCC, drawing particular attention to collaboration which is needed in curbing corruption within the Niger Delta region. “We, therefore, implore you all to be ambassadors of the fight against the common enemy of our society, which is corruption", he said.
Nwokike, during the lecture, told the students that their job is crucial as both organizations collaborate to ensure that illegal oil bunkering activities are completely eradicated.
“However, I want to let you know that, your job responsibility is key to EFCC, hence the two agencies cannot work separately in dealing with bunkerers. The two must work together as a team, which is why coordination and collaboration between the two agencies become very significant”, he said.
He stated that the role of the EFCC is critical to the nation's fight against economic and financial crimes, including illegal oil bunkering, advance fee fraud, internet fraud, counterfeiting, impersonation and several social vices in the country.
“It must be stated that at no time in the history of Nigeria has so much been demanded from a single institution or agency of government like the expectations from the EFCC. The Commission has grown to be perceived in the eyes of Nigerians as a solver of all problems even those outside its roles”, he said.
The Commander charged the students not to relent but to stand up against corrupt practices and report same to the EFCC. “As young men and women in uniform, when you see something, say something and the EFCC will do something. I urge you to pull efforts together, cooperate with EFCC in this fight", he said.
Responding, the Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Navy Intelligence School. NNIS, Commodore A. A. Raji, appreciated the EFCC for making it an obligation to sensitize the Navy. “The lecture has been very educative and interesting, both the students and instructors enjoyed it”, he said.
