Man Docked for N3.3m Car Scam in Kaduna

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday 13th April, 2022, arraigned one Theophilus Akins before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, Kaduna on a one count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation.

Akins entered into an agreement with the Complainant sometime in 2019 to help in selling three cars valued at N3,380,000 ( Three Million, Three Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira only) but diverted the proceeds to personal use.

The one count charge reads: “That you, Theophilus Akins "M" sometimes in July, 2020 in Kaduna, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court whilst being entrusted with a property to wit; BMW X3 vehicle worth the sum of N 1,500,000.00 (One Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) only by Tajudeen Sani to sell on his behalf, did dishonestly misappropriated the proceeds realised from the sale, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 293 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017 and punishable under Section 294 of the same Law.

He however pleaded not guilty when the one count charge was read to him.

Prosecuting counsel, Y.J Matiyak, urged the court to fix a date for commencement of trial but defence counsel, Frank Akhareghemen prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail.

Justice Khobo however granted bail to the defendant in the sum of One Million Naira with a reliable surety in like sum. The surety must own a property with valid title documents.

The case has been adjourned till June 13, 2022.
