The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Gombe Zonal Command, on Thursday, 28 October, 2021 secured the conviction and sentencing of one Orji Onoh, a business man to two years imprisonment.
Orji was first arraigned before Justice J. A. Awak of Gombe State High Court, Gombe State on August 20, 2019 on a one count charge bordering on Issuance of Dud Cheque to the tune of Three Million, Six Hundred and Forty Nine, Five Hundred Naira only (N3, 649.500).
Onoh's ordeal started sometime between February and March 2016 when he was paid the sum of Twenty Eight Million, Three- Hundred and Fifty Eight Thousand Naira ( N28,358,000) for the supply of Donkey Hide for which he was only able to supply Twenty One Million, Three Hundred and Seventy Nine Naira (N21,379,000) worth of the goods, leaving a balance of Three Million, Six Hundred and Forty Nine, Five Hundred Naira only ( N3,649.500).
The defendant rather than owing up to his liability, issued a cheque to the tune of the outstanding balance of N3, 649.500.00 in favour of Blazers Brothers Global Resources Limited, which was returned due to insufficient funds.
The convict pleaded not guilty upon his arraignment leading to a full trial with the prosecution calling three witnesses while the defendant called one witness.
Justice Awak convicted and sentenced the defendant to two years imprisonment starting from the date of his arrest. He equally ordered him to restitute the sum of N3, 649.500 to the nominal complainant.
