Former OAU Student Bags 8 Years in Jail for Fraud

ustice M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court Enugu on March 25, 2013 convicted and sentenced one Daramola Olawale, a former student of Obafemi Awolowo University to 8 years in prison for fraud and obtaining money under false pretence.

Daramola was arraigned on July 2, 2012 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 4- count charge of allegedly defrauding one Rev. Jeffrey Ramsey when he represented himself as a custom agent.

Though Olawale had pleaded not guilty to the charge when he was first arraigned, he however changed his plea from 'not guilty' to 'guilty' on March 25, 2013.

Counsel to the Olawale, A. Salawu pleaded with the court for leniency as he claimed that the parents of the accused had suffered hardship due to his incarceration and that the accused had become remorseful.

Justice Shuaibu sentenced Olawale to two years imprisonment on each of the four counts but the sentence is to run concurrently with effect from May 12, 2012.

One of the charges against Olawale read, "that you Daramola Olawale on or about the 12th day of May 2012 at Enugu within the Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud, attempted to obtain the sum of N200,000 from one Rev. Jeffery Ramsey when you purportedly represented yourself as a custom agent and that you have cars for sale, which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (1) (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same Act".
