Magistrate Commends EFCC Detention Facilities

The Chief Magistrate, Special Grade and Deputy Chief Registrar, DCR, High Court of Edo State, C. A. Nwoha, today, December 20, 2018 paid an unscheduled working visit to the Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The Magistrate said her visit was in compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of Edo State.


According to her, Section 34 of the law makes it mandatory for the Magistrates to visit detention centres within their jurisdiction. "The law makes it mandatory for us to  visit detention centres,  cells, see the inmates, find out the number of inmates and how long they have been there and whether they were granted bail or they have been denied bail when it is a bailabĺe offence".

Mailafia Yakubu, Zonal Head, Benin Zonal Office who led the magistrate and her team to inspect the detention facilities said the Commission's doors were opened at all times and that the Commission perform its duties within the ambit of the law.

After inspecting the facilities, the magistrate who was accompanied by Oara Momoh Nasiru and F.I. Oshiobor both registrar in Magistrate Court 2, Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State commended the Commission for adhering to the law. "I have seen a substantial compliance by the EFCC with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law", she said.
