The Maiduguri Zonal Head of Operations of the EFCC, Aminu Ado Aliyu on Thursday, May 31, 2018 visited the chairman and members of Borno State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, to commiserate with them on the demise of its members, Jonathan Gopep and Daud Mbaya.
According to Aliyu, “we are here to condole with you over the death of your members, Mr. Jonathan Gopep of Channels Television Damaturu, Yobe state and Mr. Dauda Mbaya of Nigerian Pilot Newspapers Maiduguri Borno State".
He said it was painful that they passed on at a time their services was most needed by the nation but urged the union and their families to be comforted by the fact that they ran a good race and left legacies that will stand the test of time.
Aliyu used the opportunity of the visit to seek greater cooperation and collaboration between the NUJ and the Commission.
He also updated them on the activities of the Commission in the zone. “The Commission has received over 240 cases and filed 20 cases in court while N30 million was recovered in Borno and Yobe states in the last six months.
"Some of the major cases include the one involving staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Flour Mills officials, among others".
On his part, the Chairman of Borno State Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Haruna Dauda Biu expressed delight for the visit and reiterated his union's commitment to the fight against corruption.
Dauda appealed to the Commission to support the work of Journalists through training of reporters and to hold regular interface with them.
