Justice Nuhu Yahaya Galadanci of the Kano High Court, on February 11, 2013 sentenced one Nathaniel Abutor to six month imprisonment for offences bordering on fraud and impersonation. The convict who pleaded guilty to a 10-count charge was however given the option of Twenty Thousand Naira (N20, 000) fine.
One of the charges reads "That you Nathaniel Abutor on or about 14th May 2012, in Kano within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Justice of Kano with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of Thirty Five Thousand Naira (N35,000) from one Onifade Rachael Omoladun through the Eco Bank Account 0022820113 of Uwaleke Regina under the false pretence that you have secured an employment for Onifade Rachael Omoladun at Golden Cross Hospital and the said money is meant for uniforms and accommodation in the new employment, which pretence you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 321 and punishable under section 322 of the Penal Code".
Nathaniel, 32, who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sometime in June 2012, was arraigned before Justice Galadanci on February 11, 2013.
In view of his plea, the prosecuting counsel, A.M Ekwu urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly. But defence Counsel Ibrahim Umar, pleaded with the court for leniency considering the fact that the convict is a first time offender.
