Absence of Council Chairman Stalls Arraignment of Officials over IDPs’ Food Scam

The arraignment of officials of Mafa Local Government council indicted in a fraud case bordering on stealing of food meant for internally displaced persons in the council area could not go ahead today as planned owing to the absence of Shettima Lawan Maina, caretaker chairman of the council who was to be docked alongside Umar Ibrahim a supervisory Councillor and Bulama Ali Zagebe.

Ibrahim was arrested early this month for conspiracy and selling 300 bags of rice donated by the Danish Refugee Council for IDPs in Mafa council area. He had claimed during interrogation that he acted on the directive of Maina.

When counsel to EFCC K. Sanusi sought leave of the court for the accused to take their pleas,  counsel to the 2nd and 3rd  defendants raised objection based on the absence of Maina in court.

Thereafter, Justice F. Umaru adjourned the case to the 9th February 2017 for the prosecution to amend the charge and arraign the suspects accordingly.
