Justice Ebenezer Aladetoyinbo of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Maitama, Abuja has convicted and sentenced one Dogo Williams to five years imprisonment on a six count charge of obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N2,030,000 (Two Million and Thirty Thousand Naira) brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes commission, EFCC.

Williams was arraigned alongside one Issa Abdullahi, on June 24, 2009  for offences bordering on obtaining money by false pretence contrary to section 1 (1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.

One of the charge reads:

“That you, Dogo Williams, sometime in April 2007 at the Wuse General Market within the jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, with intent to defraud, obtained by false pretence the sum of N290,000 (Two Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira only) from one Nicholas Maduka on the pretext of securing and letting out a shop space for him in the market, when you knew you had no such shop for let and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act No14 of 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

After diligent prosecution, Justice Aladetoyinbo found Williams guilty on counts two to six, and sentenced him to five years imprisonment on each count.

The sentence is to run concurrently, with effect from July 6, 2010.

Justice Aladetoyinbo also sentenced the second accused, Abdullahi to two years imprisonment with an option of N20,000.00 (twenty thousand naira) as fine, having pleaded guilty to count one.
