Whistle blowers key to Anti- Graft Success – Lamorde

Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde, has stressed the important role of whistleblowers in the war against corruption.Lamorde also noted that ridding the country of economic and financial crimes, requires supportive legislation.

Lamorde, who made the assertion at a roundtable on whistle-blowing, held at the  ECOWAS Secretariat, Abuja, on March 11, 2015, stated that, the achievements of the EFCC in securing 465 convictions from 2010-2014 could not have been possible without the important roles played by whistle blowers.

“Apart from putting in place relevant legislation and creating enforcement institutions, communities, interest groups, the media and indeed civil society must be mobilized to fight a scourge that is fast making 50 odd years of independence in Africa , meaningless,” he said.

Citing Article 54(d) (e) of the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework, Lamorde said, “the adoption and/or enforcement of policies and mechanism to enhance participation at all levels in the governance process, is a major milestone in the journey towards reducing the malaise of corruption in West Africa.”

The conference was organised for member institutions of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa.
